Goodkid’s cover of Laufey’s From the Start is exactly what you’d expect from a band that thrives on jittery, math-tinged indie rock—but that’s what makes it so fun. Instead of simply replicating Laufey’s jazz-infused original, Good Kid injects their signature energy: bright, punchy guitars, crisp, kinetic drumming, and a rhythm that skitters just enough to make the whole thing feel like it’s barely holding together (in the best way).
What really sells it is the vocal delivery—where Laufey’s version leans into wistful, unrequited yearning with her dreamy jazz phrasing, Good Kid’s version translates that same longing into something more urgent, more restless. It’s a great example of how a good cover doesn’t just mimic—it reinterprets. The track doesn’t lose its romantic core, but with the added indie-rock bite, it feels like a lovestruck daydream teetering on the edge of a full-blown adrenaline rush.

It’s not a cover that tries to outdo the original—it just plays by a different set of rules, turning a jazz-pop ballad into something that could easily soundtrack a chaotic, coming-of-age summer. If you’re into Good Kid’s usual hyper-catchy, anime-opening-adjacent sound, you’ll love this. If you’re a Laufey purist… well, it might just surprise you.
